Echofon for Firefox version 1.9.6 is now available for download! Here is what's new in this version.
Echofon for Firefox now supports OAuth. There are two major benefits to this. First, since we don't need to send a password with every request, it's safe to use a non-SSL connection. This means communication with Twitter happens faster. If you would rather use SSL for all requests, there is an option to do so in the preferences.
The second benefit is that Twitter allows apps which use OAuth 350 API calls per hour. This is a huge improvement from the 150 calls per hour limit that our app was previously subject to! If you've ever encountered a rate limit error, this should be great news for you.
Echofon Makes the Awesome Bar Much More Awesome
You can now type "@username" into the Awesome Bar (Firefox location bar). This will open the user's timeline at twitter.com. It's a small improvement, but we've found it to be surprisingly useful!
Linux Text Field Bug Workaround
If you use Firefox 3.6 on Linux, you may have noticed an bug in the text entry field. This is a Firefox bug which we have reported to Mozilla. It hasn't yet been fixed so we have implemented a workaround in the meantime to avoid the issue.
Version 2.0 Being Planned
It's been a long time since we released the first Echofon for Firefox version (known at the time as TwitterFox). Now we are at version 1.9.6 and the extension is almost 3 years old. We are planning out version two which will bring it up to date with all the latest Twitter features and some other surprises. We're excited about it, and working hard on it so stay tuned!
